A Tiny Shop that Sells Great Biscotti :)

Uncle Chee Hiong bought us these fabulous biscotti sometime back and now we craved for it. Mom & I went looking for it during lunch today! :)))

The biscottis are available in Original Almond, Orange Almond, Choc Chip Pistachio, Cranberry Pistachio, and Oreo Almond.

I tried the original almond & choc chip pistachio. I much prefer the original almond ones.
See how thin the biscotti is! Even grandmom is loving it! Once you start, you can't stop.

It's amazing to find such gem in the heartland. :) A tiny shop that sells great biscotti! :D

Shanghai in Shanghai Renjia (上海人家)

Thanks to our dear cousin, Yayi who's coming back to Singapore for a break this week, we couldn't go to Shanghai. Hence when Pauline suggested doing dinner at Shanghai Ren Jia, we jumped on it. :)

We waited 2 hours for a table... *.* Have I waited so long for a table before??? And because we waited so long, our expectations were raised...

The boss strongly recommended we try their stir-fry dou miao (豆苗). It was quite good except a tad oily.

I never thought of mixing yellow chives and eggs. But this simple combination was rather amazing. I'm gonna try to make this dish myself. ;)

Shanghai Renjia received lots of raving reviews on their handmade noodles. And so we ordered one with pork chop & the other with diced chicken to try. We love the texture of the noodles. They were very springy. But the sauce tasted like Indo Mie's... A big minus. : ( We would prefer if they just serve plain with shallot oil.

The interval from the first four items to the next was reaallllly long. *.* We were more fortunate than the others who had yet to savour their first dish! :)))

We have no idea why the Shanghainese drunken chicken took such a long time to be served when it's actually a cold dish. Pauline found the Chinese wine too overwhelming but the rest of us were ok with it. :) It's drunken chicken after all! :D

We waited a long while for the shen jian bao (生煎包) too. Patience is required while dining here. We weren't blown away by these cutesy buns. Thank goodness we didn't listen to Pauline & order two servings. We had dfficulities finishing even one.

I can't remember how long we waited for the xiao long bao (小笼包). These were juicy! :) Shanghai Ren Jia doesn't serve their xiao long baos with vinegar & ginger dip because the boss is confident they are so good they can be eaten on their own.

The boss was very sincere in getting us to try his spring roll. How do you turn down such good gesture. So we tried. Happy. It's probably our fav dish at Shanghai Ren Jia. The fillings is shredded turnip & porky bits. :) Crispy on the outside, gluey & flavourful on the inside. Be very careful when eating this. It's very hot! :)

Unless you have great patience, we wouldn't recommend this place.

Birthday Cake for Mom &...Koka :)))

I made an extra effort to drive to Goodwood Park Hotel this afternoon to buy mom a durian mousse birthday cake. The choice is simple. She loves durian & her baby, Koka loves loves loves durian.
Koka was on standby to have the first bite! :)))

We love the D24 durian pulp in the cake. So rich & creamy...goodbye diet... *.*

Oh do keep a lookout for the annual Durian Fiesta by Goodwood Park Hotel Deli, starting every March of each year. ;)

Steaming Hot Birthday Dinner for Mom at Imperial Treasure Steamboat Restaurant - Round 2

Big aunty (大姨) wasn't able to make it for the dinner at Chui Huay Lim. So we got her to celebrate mom's actual b'day with us at Imperial Treasure Steamboat Restaurant. It's our favourite steamboat restaurant in Singapore. :)

We were given two private rooms to choose & we chose Wang Shou (萬壽 - million years old). Very fitting for a birthday celebration. :)

We like how we could create our own dips from an array of condiments. :)

Who's able to resist these deep fried fish skins??? Nom, nom, nom...

Here's what in our pot of steaming goodness:
Creatures from under the sea. :) Sliced fish, shrimps & scallops.

Pork & chive dumplings as well as shrimp dumplings. :) These were really well made. Each dumpling oozed flavourful juices with every bite. :)

And what's steamboat without these gorgeous wagyu beef slices & Kurobuta pork belly slices? :)

Assortment of fish balls, shrimp balls, octopus balls & meat balls as well as silky tofu. :)

We had lots of daikons, winter melons, Chinese cabbage & assorted mushrooms too. :)

For carbos, we opted for Cixi noodles & octopus paste noodles (it's the one which you had to squeeze the noodle out from the bag).

The traditional pork bone soup with all the other treats smelt so good! :) Steamboat dinner is actually a busy affair as you have to "work" for your food. There's a server on stand by but nothing beats doing it yourself. :)))

Dessert was birthday dumplings for the birthday girl. We praise God for another year of blessings for mom & many many more to come. :)

Celebrating Mom's Birthday at Chui Huay Lim - Round 1

Mom's turning 60 and we did an early celebration for her at Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine.

The place was packed on a Monday.

The birthday celebration started with steamed birthday buns for the birthday girl. The buns were soft but the bean paste filling was too dry.

The Teochew cold crabs were fleshy & sweet and packed with crab roes! :) Who cares about cholestrol? ;)

I'm usually not into deep fried traditional Teochew five spice rolls but these were pretty good. I had two to three I think! :)))

Next dish, pig trotter jelly was a no go for me. But grandmom loves it! :)

I'm not into Teochew fried oyster omelette too. Yahui had lots of it, including my share! :D

Teochew style steamed promfret at it freshest. Loving it! The broth was light but flavourful, further enhancing the sweetness of the fish. :)

The braised conpoy with eight vegetarian treasures were bursting with flavours.

The bean sprouts gave the fried seafood noodle extra crunch. It wasn't too oily. Nice. :)

The Teochew "Puning" fermented bean chicken was well, an acquired taste. The chicken was very tender though. Beneath the chicken were preserved mustard. Uncle Francis seemed to like it alot...

Braised goose is one of the must haves when we have Teochew cuisine. Unfortunately it was badly done at Chui Huay Lim. The meat was extremely tough. *.*  A big minus here...We told the manager about it, and she told us it was an old goose...if you know it's an old goose & the meat is going to be tough, why bother serving it in the first place???

We had two types of desserts to sweeten our dinner. First up was yam paste with pumpkin & ginkos. It was smooth & wasn't too sweet. :)

We didn't think the sugar encrusted yam sticks was well done. To do this well, the taro has to be really good.

And here's us with our guests. :)

Sweet Treats from Lin's Biz Trip :)

Lin's back from her Japan business trip and see what sweet treats she got me! :) My fav Pierre Herme macarons. :) Of all the flavours, my fav has still gotta be choc macarons. :) Faithful eh? :)

The other stuff she brought home was Nagano's Apple Cookies. Buttery with subtle apple aftertaste. :)
