Day 4: Yunnan Military Academy (云南陆军讲武堂)

Across the Green Lake (翠湖) is Yunnan Military Academy  Museum (云南陆军讲武堂). From the exterior,it doesn't seem to have much to offer. However in actual fact, this is an amazing museum with a story to tell. This large yellow building was once a Qing Dynasty military academy to train modern military officers. Established in 1909 and closed in 1928, Yunnan Military Academy produced 19 batches of elites in  infantry, cavalry, artillery, and engineer in total.

Photography is prohibited. Hence I'm unable to show you what's inside. But it has a fantastic collection of documents, photographs & artefacts.

As we were touring the museum, we met the resident calligrapher, Wang Kui. We spent about an hour with Wang Kui as he proudly showed us his awards and work, and even gave us some for souvernirs. This man has so much passion for calligraphy and insists on practising calligraphy everyday.

He generously shared with us the masterpieces of the other artists as well. He tried his best to explain the meaning of each calligraphy to us.

We ended up getting him to calligraph "God's Abundant Blessings" in Chinese for the dining room in our new house. :) A little something to remember our stay in Kunming. ;)
